For some women, the first time being called "ma'am" can mark a frustrating turning point where they may feel their youth is over, and the world now regards them as old.
Exhibit A. Excuse me, young lady, you've dropped your candy.
Whoops! Thanks, mister!
Exhibit B. Excuse me, ma'am, you've dropped your checkbook.
Thanks.
Unfairly, the male equivalent, "sir", is unequivocally regarded as a title of respect and distinguishment.
Exhibit C. Excuse me, young man, you've dropped your candy.
Gee thanks, mister!
Exhibit D. Excuse me, sir, you've dropped your candy.
Gee thanks! I sure do love candy!
