When I was a kid, I figured out how to turn a paperclip into a spring.
open it up like this
Then bend the ends apart vertically.
The paperclip will want to stay this way. Gently bend the ends back so that they cross back over under tension.
Throw it against a desk and it'll pop up.
I got in trouble for this at school once.
